The English and Wales Pitted Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by rugby legends including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales find themselves placed in an identical pool for the World Cup in 2027, promising a major pool stage clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw mirrors their memorable clash in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at Twickenham played a part in the hosts' surprise group stage elimination.

Key Group Pairings

The Irish alongside Scotland also share a pool once again, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, they secured a 36-14 win, with their opponents failing to advance to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, both made a strong impression as surprise packages in the last World Cup, round out that same group.

Notably, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from defending champions and world number one the Springboks until the final, assuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Tournament Implications

If the groups play out in line with the current world rankings, other leading contenders like New Zealand and France would remain separated from the likes of England and Ireland all the way to the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on that half of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Draw Major Opener

Hosts Australia find themselves alongside their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Group A.

The Wallabies will open the tournament in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match designed to launch the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions the Springboks have drawn Italy, Georgia and Romania. The French team are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Argentina will take on the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the tournament grows to twenty-four nations from the twenty who competed in 2023.

This edition will introduce a last-16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the victor of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the rugby's heavyweights early on, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – probably Italy – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
