The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.
Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.
Players are granted the option to challenge specific decisions made by the official, echoing the protocol already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a player can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.
In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
